I’m back! That’s right, after 5 years, and 4 months, Fred’s Place is back online. Since I haven’t done anything with Half-life of TFC since the original server went offline back in May of 2001, I’m rusty as all hell. In addition to trying to figure out all the new Steam B.S., I haven’t done anything with web pages since then either, so this page will look like shit for a while.

Anyways, I plan on sticking around and working on making Fred’s Place a fun place to kick ass again. I know TFC is 8 years old, but it’s still fun, and free to play. I’ve decided to dedicate 1 Megabit of my new connection to the server, so bandwidth shouldn’t be a problem. The server itself might be another issues. Currently, it is pretty much the original server configuration, a 933 MHz PIII one an ASUS board with 320 Meg of RAM, running Win 98 SE.

With the added processing power required to run FoxBot and Admin mod (not currently installed), I’ll probably have to upgrade to a faster CPU, RAM and Win XP. I’ll probably keep the player count at 18 until I can upgrade the server. That should ensure a lag free server. I’ve already noticed map changes take a little longer than they should, this is due to the server’s need to reload FoxBot for each map.

Feel free to Email me if your having any server problems. The current map rotation is just 2fort / well. When I get some more time, I’ll get Admin mod up and running so the server will have map voting.

There was a problem with the software responsible for updating to the stats page (it kept crashing). I upgraded the software and changed a setting or two, with any luck its fixed. I'm using LeapFTP running a script to do the updates, if you know of a better way of doing this or better (more reliable) software to use let me know. I never said I knew what I was doing.

The stats of the top 50 players are now updated to the webpage every hour. You can view them by clicking on the STATS button on the top of the screen. Netscape users might encounter a small problem with the stats page. FriTz worked long and hard to get the page to even be viewable with Netscape. So.....if any Netscape users have a problem with the page, you can:

1: Shove it up your ass (with no lube)

2: Get off your sorry ass and click here to go download a REAL browser

FriTz is also starting up his "Save FriTz's eyeballs" campaign. FriTz has an old ass, 60 MHz refresh rate, 17 inch monitor. After spending countless hours editing scripts over the last few days, he's got a headache bigger than his Ego. He is currently accepting large cash donations, or a new 17 inch Sony Trinitron.

FriTz has worked his magic, and gotten map voting back on Fred's Place. Fred's Place is now running the Admin Mod, version somth'in or another. This lovely program allows for map voting and many other cool ass functions.

The server has also been updated with the newest patch from Valve. Amazingly enough, there have been no problems with the latest patch (which is truly amazing when looking at Valves pathetic track record).

There comes a time, when I encounter such a level of stupidity....that I'm forced to get off my lazy ass, and actually update the site. [2iD]john[LdR] has risen to the occasion, thus forcing this update. I've got to admit, [2iD]john[LdR] has taken the cake, not just a piece, I mean the whole damn thing. Out of all the loosers that have been banned, no one has shown this level of stupidity. I haven't encountered an individual with such an amazingly lack of intelligence since I was in High School. Here's how our little adventure started out:

I was talking to a few people about lag, and mentioned that I might be buying another 128 Meg stick of RAM in a few months. Afterwards, I will probably up the player count to 26 or so. [2iD]john[LdR] jumps into the conversation, telling me "fred lower the players to 18". I respond to John "Nope, sorry John." John then starts demanding that I lower player count. Before I can respond to him (since I was talking to four people at once), he tells me "if you dont lower it to 18 ill tell everyone to stop coming here".

Now he's starting to get annoying. I explain to him the very simple concept: If he wants to play on an 18 player server, there are a lot of other servers out there, go find one. I personally like large games, and since I pay/own/run Fred's Place, I'm not going to lower it. I then tell him to go ahead and tells all his friends to not play here. If someone doesn't want to play on Fred's Place, fine....I don't care. I then proceeded to tell him that Fred's Place is currently ranked #20 by www.theclq.com. I highly doubt him and his few friends not playing will make any sizable dent in that kind of ranking.

Now, at this point most people would either live with the higher player count, or find another server to play on. But not Johnny...oh no. He must have realized that his attempt to make me worry about loosing players failed quit miserably. It was time for another tactic...hmm.....Johnny puts his pathetic brain to work, adds 2 and 2 together.....comes up with 5 as the answer...and has a plan!

He now tells me "ill have the server shutdown". Now folks, this was a first. I've had people threaten to hack into my system on a few occasions, but never threaten to shut it down completely. At this point, I've had enough of this crap, and just want to play the game. I tell him one last time to just find another server, but he continues on his rant about shutting down the server, and how I'd be sorry. That was enough for me. I sent him one last message "Good luck John, and bye bye now". Grabbed his Won ID#, and gave him the boot.

I was truly amazed, after I booted him, 8 or so people thanked me for getting rid of him. I didn't realize how many other people were tired of his shit (I have gotten a few Emails in the past bitching about him). 5-10 minutes later, he logs back in again. He manages to tell me "thats it your gonna be sorry now im pissed" before I write down his new WonID# and ban him once again.

After a few hours of getting my ass kicked, and dish'in out a hand full of EMP's, I log off and check Email. Here's the sorry ass Email I got from Johnny:

This has to one of the sorry'ist, most pathetic Emails I've received to date. Like the CIA has nothing better to do that shut down a (legal) gaming server. Who cares about the international spies, or the Chinese government stealing our Top Secret Nuclear documents. All this just pales in comparison to Johnny boy getting banned from a TFC server. Hmmm...........yeah right. And what reason would the CIA has for shutting down the server.....none. Yup, that's right, Fred's Place is a 100% legally ran server. Hell even the HL account I use is a legal copy. If they did somehow "block" my IP address, it only take a phone call, and one business day for me to change my IP address. The CIA lessoning to a 12 year old, dumbass punk, I think not.

The next day, walking by the server I glance at the console, and notice Johnny's back. He's talking to a member of his clan, saying how he's going to get the server shut down. I write down his new Won ID# (3rd HL account), say "Bye John", and ban his new account. Amazingly enough, when I check Email hours latter, I've got another, sadly written Email from Johnny:

Notice the significantly different tone of this one. After I didn't bother responding to his threats, he must have realized I'm not to scared. Once again, the in-maturity, and amount of B.S. contained within this Email is nothing short of a miracle. I know the U.S. public school system isn't the best in the world, but DAMN. I was writing better than this in the 3rd grade. Hay Johnny, why don't you see if your "CIA connections", can help your sorry ass get some form of an education. I'm not talking about anything major like a High School Diploma or nothing. Just your basic, Elementary education would be a significant improvement for you.
